Brno, Sep 26 (BD) – In June this year, the Office of the Architect of the City of Brno (KAM), in cooperation with the Brno-střed city district, announced a competition for architects to conceive ideas for the possible future shape of the most prominent square of “Old Brno”. Seven architect studios entered the contest. The committee, including independent experts and local politicians, selected the best project this week.
The time frame for the renovation of the square has not been set yet. “I am very glad we are now a step further along. After finishing the renovation of Dominikánské náměstí, we are going to transform Mendlovo náměstí, with its beautiful dominant feature, the Augustinian monastery. Brno’s residents will have another pleasant place to live,” said Brno Mayor Petr Vokřál.
The goal of the competition was to find the the best urban-architectural solution for Mendlovo náměstí. A valuable, conceptual design will serve as the basis for future decisions on further development of the city, or as the basis for changes to the Brno City Zoning Plan.
The first prize was awarded to Michal Palaščák and Michal Poláš, the second prize was given to Atelier RAW, and the third prize was awarded to the architects Hrůša & spol., Ateliér Brno. The winning designers will receive a prize of 500,000 CZK, the second studio a prize of 450,000 CZK, and the third 250,000 CZK. The committee’s evaluation of the projects entered was anonymous.
