Brno, Nov 9 (BD) – Swedish photographer Johan Bävman, previous winner of the World Press Photo award (2009), is portraying several men who have decided to stay home with their children for at least six months. “I saw a survey in which children put people in order of whom they would look to for consolation and whom they would entrust: almost all of them put their mother in first place. Their fathers were less frequent than other relatives or school workers,” said Bävman, in a press release explaining the moment of inspiration for the project.
The aim of the exhibition is to show the benefits that a general system of parental leave can have for both individuals and society as a whole, and to trigger a discussion on the distribution of parental leave between both parents. “With this project, I want to find out why these men have chosen to stay at home so much longer than the majority of Swedish dads. What has it done for them, how have their relationships with their partner and their child changed, and what expectations did they have before taking parental leave?”, wrote Bävman on his website.
The opening ceremony took place on Monday in the presence of the Swedish Ambassador to the Czech Republic, Anne Victoria Li.
The traveling exhibition has been already available in Prague, Pardubice and Ostrava. The exhibition has also been shown in more than 50 states around the world.
