Brno, July 20 (BD) – Summer is the season of reconstructions in the whole city of Brno. The heart of the city – Spilberk Castle – couldn’t be an exemption. The reconstructions began this Monday and the entrance from Husova street will be closed until the repairs are finished.
Complete reconstruction of Špilberk was launched 30 years ago; the current repairs are focused on the reservoir beneath eastern bastion, part of the eastern and northern walls, northeastern bastion, and entry to the famous casemates. Also an insulation will be installed to prevent future water leakages at the castle.
The two gigantic reservoirs have served as storage for drinking water since 19th century. They dramatically deteriorated during the communist regime period.
“The area of one of the reservoirs was trespassed by unknown visitors who left punk and anti-communist writings on the walls,” adds Michael Kalábek, spokesman of the Brno City Museum.
Tourist will be able to visit the castle normally. Tours to the casemates, exhibitions, events and Summer Shakespeare Festival will take place as originally scheduled. Visitors can enter the castle from Gorazdova street.
Deputy Mayor Richard Mrazek explained that the current repairs were planned for a long time. “The current reconstruction should focus on the major problem of the wall leakage.”
The construction plan was approved this May by Brno City Council for the price of almost 93 million CZK. 90 % of the costs will be covered by EU funds.
