Nov 21 (BD) – Last week, six Czech tourists were arrested in Kazakhstan for wearing nothing but mankinis and posing for photos in Astana.
The tourists were arrested and each fined 22.500 tenge ($67/ £51) for their revealing appearances.
Actor and screenwriter Sacha Baron Cohen has offered to pay the fines for the tourists who were inspired by his movie Borat! Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan.
The actor on Facebook said: “To my Czech mates who were arrested. Send me your details and proof that it was you, and I’ll pay your fine.” He provided the email address arrestedforwearingyourmankini@gmail.com.
The mankini, an portmanteau word from man’s bikini, became famous in Cohen’s 2006 comedy..
In the film Cohen plays Borat Sagdiyev, who travels to the US to make a documentary. The comedy earned the actor a Golden Globe award but also attracted controversy.
The film was banned in Kazakhstan as the authorities claimed it portrayed the country as primitive and racist, although the film later promoted tourism and visa applications numbers rose.
