Masaryk University reported that two of their Medicine students Tomáš Jůza and Martin Jakub Arbet received a global recognition at European Congress of Radiology in Vienna, thanks to their research. The students were comparing two methods of treating certain types of cancer.
Their research was conducted on the livers of three experimental pigs. Two animals underwent the chemotherapy treatment together with other interventions, while the third – control animal – did not receive any chemotherapy. After 3 days, the researchers examined and compared the results.
The first method in hand was Radiofrequency Ablation which is regularly used for medical applications. The second method is based on the use of ultra-short but strong electrical pulses, is more recent and less described one. The students researched how these two methods work together with specific chemotherapeutic agents.
The students had the opportunity to present their research in front of around 3,000 participants from 16 countries at the international congress of radiology. Both researchers are currently working on the second round of their experiment.
