Brno, Apr 13 (BD) – The first wolf pack to be seen in the Beskids Mountains [Czech ‘Beskydy’, more here] in twenty years was confirmed when the wolf pack’s movements were captured by photo traps.
The existence of the pack in the Czech-Slovak border regions had already been suspected based on regular winter monitoring. So-called ‘wolf patrols’ regularly found traces of 3 wolves, especially in the Javorniky area.
Over the past 20 years, individual wolves have been spotted in the Beskids area, but never a whole pack.
“Although no damage caused by a wolf was reported last year in the Beskids Mountains, we can count on the permanent presence of wolves, bears and lynxes in the local mountains,” said Dana Bartošová from the Beskids office of the Nature Conservation Agency of the Czech Republic.
“Wolves have an irreplaceable role in nature – they help maintain the natural balance,” she added.
Photo traps have also revealed that there are at least eleven adult lynxes and five kittens, as well as one bear, in the Beskids and in Javorníky, according to yesterday’s joint press release by the Nature Conservation Agency of the Czech Republic, Friends of the Earth Czech Republic, and the State Nature Protection, PLA Kysuce.
